We got touching feedback. Transgender and other non-binary runners have been forced to choose between two gender options in most of the running events so far. Now is the time to make a change for the better. Helsinki Half Marathon wants to be a pioneer in this often very conservative sport industry, and encourages other running and sporting events to abandon the outdated binary viewpoint.
“Discrimination in this area has been tolerated too long. I don’t think it is ok that the person who is considering participation in the event is forced to choose between two extremes. In addition to Helsinki Half Marathon, all the other Runner’s High’s own running events are now moving to the 21st century as the participants are no longer forced to be a man or a woman. We want to welcome all the runners to our events, regardless of their gender”, comments Tero Forsberg, the CEO of Runner’s High.
Helsinki Half Marathon is the second largest half marathon in Finland, and it is expecting around 4000 registred participants this year. The gender field in the registration form has now been fixed in such a way that it is possible to choose not only between a man and a woman, but also option other. Those who have already entered the event can also change their own gender in the registration system.
